...As the adventurers leave the edge of the forest, a breathtaking sight meets them.
Before them is a cavernous chasm of incredible beauty.
"The Yawning Chasm Of [fill in the blank]". Carrow proclaims with some pride as he motions with an outstretched hand.
Narra repositions her bow on her shoulder and says, "So...this is it after all...gods...more breathtaking than the legends even speak of."
"Incredible"! Says Perf.
A subtle breeze is faintly heard whispering through the chasm.
Glorion shifts his weight and hand on the hilt of his sword, and pulls the chainmail coif slowly down from his head as if to get a better look."Hmm...I wonder why it is called the Yawning Chasm Of [fill in the blank]"?
Perf and Carrow quickly exchange glances, and with a wry smirk on his face, Perf says, "Well, it is a veeeery wide chasm".
"But it's not actually..."answers Glorion.
Perf lets out a tired yawn, interrupting Glorion's sentence.
"YES!...Yes!...That's it"!
Perf lets out another yawn..."How many blows was that then Glorion"?
Glorion gets a puzzled look on his face.
Carrow points out that this looks like a good place to rest for awhile, as Narra, looking abit sleepy herself, yawns in agreement.
"I shall stand watch, bravely then"! Glorion says, bravely.
"You do that, then." Perf says as he settles in to a cozy nap, adjusting his wide brimmed yellow hat."..."Good...yawn...night. haha...brave...Knight"
"Good day...you mean...night has yet to fall Sir Perfluous." Replies Glorion.
"Literally..."...snore...[Perf and the rest of the party fall asleep].
The breeze from the chasm and yawns from everyone seem to flow together and become louder.
...FADE TO BLACK...
Perf wakes up, startled. Not unlike when he awoke from his nightmare of Glorion "letting the encouragement sink in" some time ago.
But this time was different...
To be continued

I see the "Yawning Chasm Of [fill in the blank]" as something like the Temple Of All Dooms, in that there is some sinister magical force behind it...but, obviously, our brave adventurers are oblivious to that fact.
They do know of it from legend, and somehow it weaves it's way into their Quest.
However, they are about to discover it's mystery and why it makes everyone so sleepy.
Glorion, in his blind, bash every problem bravely approach seems to be the only one who suspects something is not as it seems. Like he was with the River and his bravely stabbing conclusion.
I just thought a "Yawning Chasm" that had some sinister effect on people...like making them yawn and fall asleep would make for a fun little encounter for our adventurers to overcome, much like the Temple Of All Dooms.
This is about all I came up with so far.
You could really do alot of iterations with the basic concept.
*Maybe the party is trying to cross through or over the Yawning Chasm, but keep falling asleep and cannot continue until...?...
*How much time goes by while they slumber?
*Can this effect be used to time travel?...do they go forward and or backward in time?
*Since it has a variable time element to it, this makes for a nice encounter that could be inserted into the story arc of the entire series probably at any point, with few continuity issues to consider, other than Carrow is now undead.
*Can Glorion find a way to kill it and unlock it's mysteries, like he did with the River, while the rest of the party continues to slumber?
...anywho, this just suggested itself to me, and I felt like sharing. :D

It's actually not a dream sequence.
Everything really happens to the party...the discovery of the Chasm, including them all falling asleep, except Glorion who seems to be immune for some reason, due to the Chasm Of [fill in the blank]s sinister effects on them.
The following scene, after everyone falls asleep, except Glorion, and it FADES TO BLACK, would be showing a close up of Perf (like in the first epsidode, when he jolts out of sleep to discover Glorion is gone).
Just as that had nothing to do with a "dream sequence", either does this.
It would open the scene from that perspective. Then you would pan around to show what Perf was looking at.
This would all be really happening, not a dream sequence.
Maybe when they were all asleep except for Glorion...Perf, Carrow, and Narra, have something going on in the dream, but Glorion is wide awake and not asleep while this would be happening.
So...no need for a "Sir Perfluous long-lost-twin in...Australia." :)

...although...if everyone feel asleep, including Glorion, that would be different.
Then they would all be in some collective dream life, and from there...who knows what could happen?
But, it is not simply Perf falling asleep imagining it all.
Maybe Glorion, (in either case if he falls asleep, or stays awake), battles the dream bravely and rescues the others from eternal slumber in his typical bravery bashing fashion.
All hail Glorion...River vanquisher and Dream slayer! :D

I could have sworn the story originally referred to "Perth". Nothing to do with Australia, really.Tim Kauffman replied:I originally, to my shame as a fan, spelled Perf..."Perth". lol...then I went back after catching the blunder and edited. So, the Australia reference ...as in the "Perth Mint" that sells precious metals? I get it now. :)
Permalink Reply by Nick on February 8, 2012 at 10:07am It would appear that the magic is intelligence-based (so lower levels of intelligence are less affected). This could be implied/suggested with text if animals were unaffected by the Sleepy magic.
Could present a reason why the magic exists though. Old defensive spell protecting a Wiz stronghold. A magic-using dragon cast it to stop the prey from running. Glorion then defeats this monster/stronghold.
Or don't worry about the orgin of the magic and have some other group with immunity (say a magical ring or counterspell) that uses the sleep effect to rob/enslave/eat creatures that fall under its effects. These folks appear and Glorion defeats them (as they are not expecting them).
Oh wait. Those don't really have the rest of the party waking up until after the effect is removed. Oh, I suppose Glorion could be at the destroyed stronghold or dead dragon etc.

This could explain why Glorion is not effected. :)

Tim replied:
Yea, nice...a Dragon. It is the source that caused everyone except Glorion to fall asleep.
Now, after a long while of standing guard, and it starting to get dark out, he begins to get naturally tired. After some difficulty deciding, he tries to wake one of them up to take his place on watch. However, they cannot be shaken from their slumber, and he becomes concerned when he realizes he cannot wake any of them!
*Then you could have some humorous time-lapse cut scenes of Glorion trying to figure out why nobody will wake up and struggling to stay awake himself.
Like he rests the point of his sword under his chin, so when he nods off, it pricks him, waking him up, or some other goofy things like that...but eventually, he falls asleep, and then everyone is asleep!
Then...enter the Dragon!
Glorion and the Dragon battle and after much battling bravely on his part, Glorion slays the Dragon.
*You could have scenes in between this battle, from the perspective of the rest of the party who lay awake now, woke up by the clamor, and they can see the fight, however, to them, Glorion seems to be practicing his sword fighting skills. Swinging and stabbing at an imagined enemy.
After awhile, they all, one by one, ignore him, and go back to sleep.
Then the Dragon is slain by Glorion.
...FADE TO BLACK...
The rest of the party wake up and all move to stand around Glorion, who is asleep.
"I feel so much safer, resting...waking...in the knowledge that Glorion is standing guard under us". Perf says smugly.
He then tries to wake him..."Glorion"...."GLORION!"
He then moves closer to wake him up.
Nara interrupts. "Wait....stand back"...and gently nudges Glorion with the end of her bow.
"Glorion...wake up!"
Glorion stirs, then jolts upright, shouting"!!!...DID YOU SEE THAT...!!!"
"...Dragon!...I saved the party!...The Dragon is dead!"
Perf interrupts..."Woah...what?"...You killed...a...Dragon?"
"BRAVELY!" Proclaims Glorion. "Surely you witnessed the heroic battle?"
"No...not as such." Answers Perf. "We saw you fighting the air with much courage, however."
Glorion looks puzzled."...but..."
"It was a dream Glorion". Nara gently says.
"But...the Dragon!..."
"You were sleep sword fighting." Carrow says. "You've done it before."
Glorion looks at him incredulously. "That's absurd!"
"That's you." Quips Perf.
"I know a Dragon when I see one!" Glorion says with conviction.
"...and did you?" Questions Nara.
Glorion grimaces. "Do I look...like...a...Riddle Pillar?"..."You can all Thank me later!"
Then a proud and fierce look overtakes him...
"ALL HAIL GLORION...THE DRAGON SLAYER!"
...Then he draws his sword awkwardly and raises it high overhead and shouts...
"!!!...ONWARD...!!!"
Nara sternly replies..."Always with the...Glorion you could wake the dead with your shouting!"
Carrow gives her a dangerous look, and frowns.
"Sorry Carrow". Nara apologizes.
"...Well...I am awake". Carrow answers and then gestures..."Onward?"
As the party leaves the area, and moves out, the camera slowly pulls away in a slow birds-eye-view.
We briefly see a quick cut scene of Perf tripping over what looks like the branch of a fallen tree.
THUDD..."Oooooouchhh!"
Then cut back to the ever increasing birds-eye-view of the clearing.
"Aimless Oaf!" Carrow jokingly says to Perf.
As the perspective gets wider and more of the area is seen from this high vantage point, the tree limb Perf tripped over, and what appear to be other fallen tree limbs begin to take on a unsuspected shape.
...A shape of the skeletal remains of a Dragon...

Tim Kauffman said:
Looks like this became a bit of a dream sequence after all. :D
When Glorion falls asleep, he is doing so naturally, and therefore is not under the influence of the Dragon like the others who fell victim to it's sinister power.
However, once he does fall asleep, this makes it possible for the Dragon to attack him.
Glorion is the only threat to the Dragon, as it's sinister influence has effected the others and not him.
Why did the Dragon not kill the others it had subdued right away? Dragons are very cunning and intelligent, so it may have had many reasons for keeping them alive. Perhaps it may have been something of an ally of the kicke'd wings?
The Dragon then attacks Glorion as soon as he falls asleep.
So both Glorion and the others in the party are seeing things from the same place, yet not the same perspective.
This is why when the others wake up, while they are still under the power of the Dragon, they see Glorion, but not the Dragon he is fighting and mistake that he is practicing his fighting skills. Then when they really wake up, after the spell is broken and the Dragon has been slain, they can only perceive that Glorion was "sleep sword fighting", because Glorion was talking like he imagined it all in a dream.
So, we find that Glorion really is a Dragon Slayer, and actually did save the party like he said because had he fallen under the power of the Dragon like they did, the Dragon would have killed all of them with no resistance.
The "Yawning Chasm Of [fill in the blank]" is named after this strange phenomenon that befell the party, which was caused by the Dragon.
Yet, the mystery remains...was the Dragons skeletal remains there before, or after Glorion killed it?
Was this a live Dragon or a undead Dragon? We will never know for sure. :)
...and why did no one notice the Dragon skeleton, even when Perf tripped over part of it?
Perhaps Glorion could see it, yet had no reason to mention the obvious to the others, while the others perceived it as fallen branches and roots, being unable to comprehend what Glorion had seen because they were once under the Dragon's power.
...and so their JourneyQuest continues...
"Which way did Glorion go?" Perth questions.
"...Just follow the trail of dead bodies." Carrow answers.
"That's a little inside joke in case you were wondering, Perth."
"...I'm sorry."
"I'll never be the life of the party again...haha...you know what I mean?"
"Gods...Carrow...I...I'm sorry."
"Meh...don't beat yourself up...I get the best of both worlds being like this...it's only HALF of the best of both worlds, but yeah..."

Note to self:
Beware of the Banana Peel Of Unintentional Doom. ;)

I like it!
Apt and describes much of the unpolished iterations rough edges well.
However, I also like the core premise of a dragon causing passersby to fall asleep in the Yawning Chasm of [fill in the blank], maybe a spirit Dragon (which would explain the Dragon bones).
I wonder if Glorion ever gets to actually fight a Dragon in JQ. Now THAT would be cool!
That aside, I do like the unofficial idea that Glorion has a problem with not sleep walking, but rather
"sleep sword fighting."
